ABUJA, 30 July, 2024  — In a formal letter addressed to the Chief of Army Staff, Deji Adeyanju & Partners, a pro human rights law firm, has called for the Nigerian Army to remain in their barracks during the scheduled August 1, 2024, national protest.

The letter expresses concern over the deployment of Nigerian Army personnel across the Federal Capital Territory and other cities, which is perceived as an attempt to suppress the planned protest. The firm highlighted that maintaining internal security, including protecting protesters, is the responsibility of the Nigerian Police Force, not the Army.

Deji Adeyanju, Esq., the signatory of the letter, emphasized that military intervention in protests often leads to escalated violence and loss of lives, citing the EndSARS protests as a cautionary example. The letter urges the Army to withdraw its personnel to avoid any potential repeat of past incidents where soldiers were involved in the deaths of protesters.

The law firm stressed the importance of allowing peaceful protests without military interference, ensuring the safety and rights of all citizens are upheld.
